Web Hosting Tips from Our Lead Web Developer – Corey Liepelt
We all know you need to have a web site for your business. Which means you have to make some important decisions about web hosting. The problem is, chances are web hosting is not your area of expertise. Sure, you are an expert at running your business. But web hosting? …A little help please!
With all the options and information out there, it’s no wonder many people feel unsure and confused about web hosting. With fifteen plus years of experience as a web developer, Corey offers his tips and advice to clear up the confusion:
Question: How should I go about purchasing web hosting? Should I purchase it myself or hire a company to handle it?
Answer: “We always recommend that our clients secure web hosting themselves so that they own the account. At Rich Life Marketing, we do not offer web hosting as one of our services. We have heard too many horror stories about business owners who have had their sites “held hostage” because a relationship went sour, and while we would never stoop so low ourselves, we still recommend to our clients that they sign up for hosting on their own.”
Question: What hosting company do you recommend?
Answer: “We usually recommend GoDaddy for hosting. We have had our web site hosted by them for years and have never had any trouble. Furthermore, they offer a feature where you can assign another GoDaddy user to be an Account Exec, which allows them to have access to your site. What that would mean for us is that you would not have to share your GoDaddy login information (the proverbial keys to the kingdom) with us. Instead, you would make us an Account Exec so we could upload your new site to your GoDaddy account, and we can do
all of that with our own login information. If we ever parted, all you would have to do is remove our Account Exec status from your account. We think it’s a great feature because once again, you retain total control of your hosting account.”
Question: How much does it cost?
Answer: “As far as cost goes, a GoDaddy 4GH Economy Linux account provides all of the storage space most small businesses need for their site, and it costs around $5 a month. They offer price breaks if you purchase a block of time up front, but even if you only went month to month your yearly cost would only be around $60.”
