How to Get Discovered
As a coach, consultant or the leader of your business, you know how much help you provide to your clients. But you may also feel really frustrated because you are still waiting to be “discovered” by the masses. Waiting to be asked to join the joint venture that you just know you should be part of. Wanting to be the next speaker at a specific conference. Frustrated that you aren’t getting the media coverage you deserve.
I know. I’ve been there.
Here’s the cold hard truth:
- Nobody wakes up thinking about how they can discover you.
- You have to make it happen yourself.
The great news is that it’s possible. It’s very possible for you. In fact, it’s probable if you know how to do it. After the 6+ years that I’ve been mentoring others to step into the spotlight and grow their businesses and doing my own coaching as well, it dawned on me one day when I was… you know… where most ah-ha moments happen. In the shower.
“Standing out and getting discovered is equal parts who you are being and what you are doing.”
This realization really stopped me in my tracks. I could see this so crystal-clear in my own businesses and in my clients’ businesses as well.
So I took many months and studied this in myself, my clients and in others. Here are the three things that I found that make the biggest differences between being somewhat successful and being wildly successful and fulfilled. Keep in mind, my clients range from startup coaches and consultants to New York Times best-selling authors/multi kajillionaires and people in-between. It’s all the same.
Discover Yourself – Again
Take time to reconnect with your core values, passions, great ideas and aspirations. This may sound trite but it’s actually essential to revisit these things from time to time. In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to disengage with what is really important. Sometimes we need someone to remind us of our true values, or coax ideas and aspirations out of the quite cozy corners of our hearts and minds. I know I do. The problem is that when we don’t to make “the main thing” the main thing, things don’t seem quite right and we’re not sure why. Once you are aware of who you are – your values, passions, ideas and aspirations – that is when you feel like yourself again and that you are “on fire.”
Reveal Yourself
This is arguably the biggest step in the process of operating a successful coaching or consulting business. Many times I see that people look for answers outside of themselves and the irony is this: That is not where the answer lies. Nobody is going to show up and deliver the one marketing and sales do-dad that will make you a million dollars overnight. What truly makes a business successful is the commitment to being the person you are right now while also stepping into who you are becoming.
It’s in all of your actions. And words. And thoughts. And decisions.
It’s all about who you are being in your everyday life. It’s about taking steps to be the person you want to be and recognizing when you are intentionally or unintentionally stopping yourself.
So the question then is this: Who do you have to be to have the things you want?
Get Discovered
When you are being your best, brightest, biggest, boldest person you want to be, opportunities seem to come easier and more frequently. There is a “flow” to how you operate. It is when your actions and intentions finally seem to pay off. Why? Because of who you are being and how you express your unique value. When you market yourself using your unique voice, passion, values and ideas, you truly stand out.
To get into some nitty gritty here, there are many great ways to stand out and get discovered. Speaking, PR, video, publishing, social media, networking, joint venturing, web site and free offers are many of the standard ways to make a name for yourself. It can be daunting to think of all the ways to market yourself, no doubt. Here’s the great news: You don’t have to do them all! You only need to strategically select a few of them to do consistently.
There is no better time than now – right now – to step into bigger possibilities for yourself. Nobody is going to do this for you. It’s all you. And that’s good news. Because you’ve got it in you or you wouldn’t have come this far already.
