Radio Interview Tips
So you’re working on booking more radio interviews and interviews on Blog Talk Radio shows. You’ve got your radio guest sheet, your headshot, your talking points and you’ve listened at least once to the show you’re about to be interviewed on. Feeling prepared will help ease any jitters you may be feeling. To help you even further, here are 12 tips to help ensure your radio interview success on the big day.
- Get in the mood! Just before the interview, stand up, stretch, jump or breathe deeply – whatever relaxes you.
- Do the interview from a quiet room. Hang a sign on your office door (or front door if you work at home) that says, “Recording a LIVE Radio Show. Knock ONLY if the building is burning down.”
- Turn off other phones, beepers, the radio, Tweet Deck and anything else that could create background noise.
- Have a glass of water at arm’s reach in case your mouth gets dry. Also have a box of tissues – just in case.
- Use a land line phone for best quality, not a cell phone. You need a clean line for a professional interview.
- Dial in at the time they request, or even a couple of minutes before. If they have arranged to call you, be at your phone ready to go.
- Stand up during your interview. Smile during your interview. The energy you create while standing and smiling will come across even over the radio.
- Have energy in your voice. Radio tends to add a dull quality to your voice so add in some life and energy.
- Know the host’s name, the producer’s name, the station call letters and other relevant info.
- Don’t be a “sales guy.” Radio professionals want their audience to be entertained while being informed.
- Write a thank-you note after your interview. Most people don’t do this so this one simple act may help you get invited back.
- Have a good way to wrap up. Be prepared to “wow” them with a great answer to a final question such as: “Do you have any final tips/advice for us?”
Most of all, go have fun and share your wisdom with the world!
