Meredith Shines the Spotlight on…Lisa Braithwaite
Name: Lisa Braithwaite
Business Name: None – yet! I am a Public Speaking Coach and Trainer.
In a few words or sentences, tell me about your work:
I help entrepreneurs and professionals deliver memorable and engaging presentations in order to build their businesses through speaking.
Tell us three words that describe you:
Dorky, Fun, Bold
What motivates you to do the work you do? What drives you?
I love speaking, teaching and training, and I love to see my clients discover the joy and amazing energy of connecting with an audience and developing their confidence as speakers.
How do you “live your brand?”
The main concepts I teach my clients to focus on are authenticity, engaging and connecting with the audience, and embracing their unique qualities in order to bring them out on stage. I live these concepts myself and I never ask my clients to take risks that I don’t take.
What is one habit you’ve formed that helps you personally or professionally?
The first thing I do in the morning (when I’m not tempted by Facebook) is to spend some time reading one of my business books. I get up, make a cup of tea, then get back into bed and read a chapter or two. I find that this is the best time of day for me to get reading done, before I get distracted by work and daily activities.
Tell me about the best business decision you have made:
The best business decision I’ve made, hands down, is to get business coaching. My business only really started to take off when I invested in training and in a group coaching program.
And your hardest lesson you have learned:
Some programs or services that seem like great ideas just won’t go anywhere no matter how hard you try. The timing isn’t right; the audience isn’t right… who knows? Sometimes you just have to let something go, even if you love it and believe in it.
What’s next for your business?
I’m desperately in need of a rebrand! I’ve recently become more clear about how I want to present myself and my core message, and as I prepare to celebrate my tenth year in business, I feel like it’s time to do a big refresh.
The “Behind the Scenes” Scoop:
Guilty pleasure: Just one? Glee. (Not surprising, as I was a theater major!)
Favorite hobby: Cooking or eating… not sure which one comes first.
All-time favorite musical, theatre production, book, movie or song – Why?
Hedwig and the Angry Inch. It was the first movie I saw in the theater more than once, and then I went on to see it 7 more times before I finally bought it, even driving down to Los Angeles with a friend to meet up with fellow “Hedheads” for a midnight showing. There’s something about the story of discovering, questioning, fighting, and then embracing one’s true identity – taking a huge risk putting your real “self” out into the world – that really moved me. And the movie is just plain entertaining with an awesome soundtrack.
Pet peeve: Misplaced apostrophes.
For lunch today: Hummus and baba ghanoush on endive leaves, and chocolate chia pudding (I’m on a sugar detox).
Just for Fun:
Chocolate or Vanilla? If we’re talking ice cream, vanilla. But with chocolate syrup.
Snow or Beach? Beach.
Green tea or black tea? Black tea. Lots and lots.
Jeans or Business Suit? Neither. Skirt.
