Meredith Shines the Spotlight on Nika Stewart

Name: Nika Stewart

Business: The Laptop Mom

After my daughter was born in 2005, I realized I needed to run my business differently.  I didn’t want to stop working, but I also didn’t want to leave Ellie in full-time day-care.  I figured out a way to leverage my knowledge to create a rewarding business that not only gives value to thousands of people around the world, but allows me the flexibility to live my life on her own terms.  I created a suite of information products that teaches designers how to build and manage a profitable, successful business.

While running my business – www.SuperstarDesigner.com – I discovered that moms all over the world are desperately searching for this same solution: a rewarding, profitable business that they could run from home, allowing them the flexibility to take care of family priorities – while they bring in a great income.

So I launched www.LaptopMom.com to show moms how to leverage their knowledge, create passive income, and build a successful business… during naptime!

LET’S TALK BUSINESS:

Tell us three words that describe yourself: Cheerful, Supportive, Open-minded

Biggest current marketing challenge: Publicity / Media coverage

What is next for your business: We have started an Info-Product Done For You program, and we are building the team to do more of these projects.  This year looks like it is all about creating profitable products for OTHER people!

Your Mentors: Heather Dominick, Ali Brown, Fabienne Fredrickson and Meredith Liepelt

Favorite way to build buzz, create celebrity and change the world: Twitter

Best business decision: Putting my ideas out there.  If I am thinking too long (obsessing) about an idea, it is time to just put it out there and tweek it as I move forward.  When I learned to stop waiting for perfection, I opened many doors of opportunity.

Hardest lesson learned: It is actually MORE expensive to hire people who work cheaply.  Early on, I wasted a lot of money because I was looking for the least expensive labor.  It wasted my time and my money.  Saving money is good, but not if it is at the expense of good work.  It costs less money to hire people who know what they are doing, even if they cost more.

THE SCOOP FROM BEHIND THE SCENES:

Guilty pleasure: Sudoku

Favorite hobby: Decorating

Pet peeve: Hearing “and I” when it really is “and me.”  It isn’t always “I” !!!  After a preposition, you use the word “ME”.

For lunch today: Well, I’m working on my laptop at Panera Bread today, so probably a Thai Chicken Salad.

JUST FOR FUN:

Pen or Pencil: Laptop 🙂

Slow or Fast: Fast Fast Fast

Jeans or Business Suit: Jeans (or a really funky, whimsical business suit)
